Which Court Handles New Iberia Civil Cases

New Iberia is the parish seat of Iberia Parish and the home of the 16th Judicial District Court. Civil cases filed by or against New Iberia residents, or involving property in Iberia Parish, are handled by this court. The Iberia Parish Clerk of Court is the official keeper of those records and is located at the same address as the New Iberia City Court: 300 Iberia Street, Suite 100.

The New Iberia City Court at 300 Iberia Street handles small claims disputes up to $5,000 and related city-level matters. For larger civil suits, the 16th Judicial District Court is the proper venue, and those records are kept by the Iberia Parish Clerk at the same address. This shared location makes it convenient to identify which court level applies to your case and to access both sets of records in one place.

The Iberia Parish Clerk's office is self-funded through fees, not taxes. As the clerk's office states, "The Clerk of Court's office does not receive ad valorem taxes. Our office operates through fees collected for the services we provide." That means every transaction has a cost, though inspecting records in person is always free under Louisiana law. Small claims filings require a $350 advanced deposit for one defendant, plus $100 for each additional defendant. Defendants must reside within Iberia Parish but outside city limits of New Iberia or Jeanerette for small claims jurisdiction.

The 16th Judicial District covers Iberia, St. Mary, and St. Martin parishes. Iberia Parish cases are the responsibility of the Iberia Parish Clerk. If you are not sure which parish a case was filed in, start with the parish where the parties lived at the time of the dispute or where the property in question is located.
