Hammond is a city in Tangipahoa Parish and the largest city in the parish. Civil cases involving Hammond residents or Hammond property are filed with the 21st Judicial District Court. The Tangipahoa Parish Clerk of Court is the official keeper of those records. The main clerk's office is in Amite, but the Hammond branch office on NW Railroad Avenue handles most civil services for Hammond residents without requiring a trip to Amite.
The Hammond City Court handles civil disputes up to $20,000 in value. For larger civil cases and most standard litigation, the 21st Judicial District Court is the proper forum. As the clerk's office describes it, "The Hammond office can perform most of the same duties as our Amite office such as, marriage licenses, passports, recordings, land searches, and the acceptance of civil documents." That gives Hammond residents a full-service clerk's office in their own city.
One important note about the Hammond office: it cannot receive mail or packages. All mail must go to the Amite main office at P.O. Box 667, Amite, LA 70422. The Hammond office also closes from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM for lunch. Plan your visit before noon or after 1:00 PM to avoid the midday closure. The Amite office does not have this lunch break.
As the clerk's office notes, Gary T. Stanga serves as Clerk of Court and "is elected to a four-year term. He is ex-officio notary public, parish recorder of mortgage and conveyances and the Chief Elections Officer of the parish." The Hammond office handles the full range of civil record services for this part of Tangipahoa Parish.
